In this lecture we discuss the initial approach to a patient with acute decompensated heart failure. We first construct a critical differential diagnosis to ensure that we are not missing any other life threatening process. Then we assess the patients respiratory status. Based on what degree of respiratory distress the patient is in, we can begin the appropriate resuscitative steps
